Packaging print proof: what to check before approval for UK projects
A proof approval should identify what you checked and exactly which version you accepted. Review the specification, written content and layout separately. A convincing screen image does not validate every physical property of the packaging.

Establish what the proof actually covers
Record the product reference, file revision and stated dimensions. Compare them with the order and the agreed dieline. Ask whether this proof covers placement and content only, or also a defined colour or finishing reference. A digital PDF and a physical sample answer different questions.
Do not treat a correct front panel as approval of the entire pack. Check every face, including the bottom and closure areas. Keep unresolved technical questions open rather than silently assuming they have been addressed.
Read the words before judging the design
Compare product names, variants, units, addresses and language versions against an approved master. Ask the responsible reviewer to check claims and any required product information for the intended market. A prepress check cannot take over that responsibility.
Open URLs and inspect the data encoded in QR codes or barcodes. A successful phone scan checks only one situation; it does not certify printed code quality across the intended reading conditions. Specify the relevant printed-sample checks where codes matter operationally.
Examine the pack after folding or sealing
Check finished dimensions, orientation and the position of essential information relative to cuts, folds, glue areas, seals and closures. Use the supplier’s safety margins rather than an assumed distance. A logo that looks centred on a flat panel may end up hidden after assembly.
Inspect technical and finishing layers according to the agreed file setup. For white ink, foil, embossing or selective varnish, confirm which areas receive the operation and which details need further review.
Separate screen checks from physical checks
PDF output tools can reveal separations and overprints. Those checks concern the file; they do not establish the feel of a coating, product fit or final colour on a particular substrate. Where these features influence the decision, agree an appropriate physical reference or sample.
Record what remains to be validated. Do not describe a rendering as a production sample, and do not use a plain structural dummy to approve final printing.
Send one traceable correction list
Use location, issue and requested action. For example: “Revision 03, front panel: the logo crosses the safety boundary. Reposition it inside the approved usable area without changing its proportions, then issue a new proof.” This is an illustrative instruction, not a reported factory defect.
Consolidate feedback through one coordinator. Recheck the complete replacement proof, including areas previously correct. Retain the approved file and written approval together. Any later change needs a new assessment of its effect on production, cost and timing.
UK artwork handover: keep destination and file versions aligned
For a UK project, identify whether the product is intended for Great Britain, Northern Ireland or more than one market. Keep the approved copy for each destination separate where it differs. A file labelled simply “English” is not enough to identify the intended variant.
Use one agreed dimension convention throughout the brief and artwork. Supply the UK delivery postcode with the project enquiry, but do not treat the destination address as a specification for the printed product. Have the responsible reviewer confirm the exact product wording and contact details before the final proof.
Questions about proof approval
Can I approve colour on my laptop? A screen view alone is not a reliable physical colour reference. Agree how a critical brand colour will be validated.
Can I change a file after approval? Ask first what stage production has reached and what revised approval is required. Do not assume the change is free or has no schedule impact.
What should I send SKLUBS? The current proof, product reference, revision and one clear list of questions or corrections. This makes the next review easier to scope.
